Am I Automatically Signed Up for Medicare?

In order to answer this question, I have to give you a yes and no answer.

Yes, I'm drawing Social Security.

If you are drawing Social Security retirement benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare upon reaching the age of sixty-five.  Therefore, you do not have to contact the Social Security Administration to complete your enrollment.

No, I'm drawing Social Security.

However, if you are not drawing Social Security retirement benefits and want to transition to Medicare as your primary insurance, you will need to complete your enrollment. In my experience, many individuals who are not receiving Social Security benefits upon reaching the age of sixty-five are still working and covered by an employer insurance plan.  Therefore, those individuals may not need to enroll.

I will share information about that in my next blog post.
